Mike Wood Lighting and Production Services, the company founded by Wood and associates to provide "innovative and affordable production design, consultation, and staffing solutions," is hosting the fundraiser at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop, at 11349 Bloomingdale Avenue in Riverview, Fla., just west of Brandon.

Wood, a 2006 graduate of Durant High School, honed his budding craft while at Durant and is now a student of Theatre Design at the University of South Florida. He credits Joy Rodgers, then his music teacher at Nativity Catholic School, with igniting in him his passion for technical production.

"I started working in technical theatre in the fifth grade, when my church choir director sat me down behind the Mackie SR32-4 and told me to 'make it sound good,' ” Wood noted. "I eventually ran all of the sound and lighting at my middle school. When I got to high school, I was working with Edward Mason, the school drama teacher, on drama productions and other events in the auditorium. I quickly taught myself everthing there was to know about the lighting system at my school, and of ourse, wanted more."

Today, that "more" includes a business that operates out of the Barn Theatre at Winthrop. The business, launched in 2007 and incorporated in 2008, has 30 crew members and a budding portfolio of shows and events throughout central Florida.

The Durant challenge, issued by theater teacher Edward Mason, is for Durant High Thespian Trouple 5444 to raise $5,000 by July 20 to produce in February 2010 the musical, Alice in Wonderland. Tickets for tonight's fundraiser are $15. Doors open at 7 p.m., at which time a silent auction also begins. Dinner is at 8 p.m. and live entertainment will be provided by Durant thespians. The Barn Theatre at Winthrop is at 11349 Bloomingdale Avenue.
